No flight, no airport transfer. From Chicago, most of the drive is interstate across northern Illinois, then rolling two-lane road into Jo Daviess County for the last stretch. From Milwaukee you come down through southern Wisconsin. Either way, the whole group can leave after lunch and be on the hot tub deck before dark.

Inside The Galena Territory
The Galena Territory is a 6,800-acre residential and resort community in the hills of northwest Illinois, with about 24 miles of walking and hiking trails and Lake Galena at its center.2 Most of it is private homes on wooded lots, which is why it is quiet. There is no traffic noise, no bar strip, no neon. At night you hear wind in the trees and not much else.
The Territory has also earned a Dark Sky designation for limiting light pollution,3 and the house does its part: exterior lights go off by 1 AM. On a clear night the tower room, with windows on all four sides, turns into an observatory. In daylight the same windows look out over treetops and the valley in every direction.
You share the hillside with wildlife. Mornings come with birdsong, deer are often at the tree line around dusk, and on many days cattle graze the pasture below the house. It is the kind of place where people put their phones down without being asked.
Your stay includes three proximity cards for the Territory's Owners Club amenities, so you can use the Territory's recreation facilities during your trip; additional guest passes can be bought at the Owners Club office.

Downtown Galena and Main Street dining
About 13 minutes away (8.4 miles).1 Galena's brick Main Street runs for blocks of independent shops, restaurants, coffee, bakeries and tasting rooms. Plan dinner downtown one night and cook at the house the next; with a group of ten, reserve ahead on Friday and Saturday.
Golf at Eagle Ridge
About 10 minutes away (4.7 miles).1 Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa has four courses and 63 holes: The General, the North and South courses, and the nine-hole East course.4 Eagle Ridge is a separate public resort inside the Territory, so tee times are booked with the resort directly. Plan a golf trip.
Skiing at Chestnut Mountain
About 21 minutes away (10.6 miles).1 Chestnut Mountain Resort has 19 ski and snowboard trails and a 475-foot vertical drop, set on the bluffs above the Mississippi River.5 Ski the day, then come back to the hot tub and sauna. Winter getaways.

- Fall: Galena Oktoberfest (Oct 3), the Galena Country Fair (Oct 10 to 11), the Galena River Fall Half Marathon (Oct 24) and the Galena Halloween Parade (Oct 31, tentative). Fall color in the hills usually peaks around mid-October. Fall stays.
